About this Hike

The Pathfinder is designed for more confident and fit hikers who want the full Great Ocean Walk experience but in a shorter timeframe. Over five days, you'll cover the entire trail from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles, averaging longer walking distances each day for a rewarding challenge. This version is ideal if you're limited on time but still want the satisfaction of completing the full track. With three nights based at Captain's at the Bay in Apollo Bay and two nights at partner accommodation closer to the western end of the trail, you'll reduce daily commute times while limiting the number of times you need to repack. As always, we handle every detail — from daily transfers to luggage transport and briefings.

Day 1

Apollo Bay Blanket Bay

22km
Start from the official trailhead on the Apollo Bay foreshore and follow the coastal track past Marengo. Follow the trail around Marengo point, through to Shelly Beach and Elliot River. The day ends at the sheltered haven of Blanket Bay, where coastal bushland and turquoise waters make for a picturesque end point. Transfer back to Captain's at the Bay for the evening.

Day 2

Blanket Bay The Aire River

22km
Leaving Blanket Bay, the trail hugs the coastline, passing a We Who Wander favourite, Crayfish Bay. From here, continue to the Cape Otway Lightstation precinct (entry included) before following the trail over rugged clifftops and down through to Station Beach. Today includes an optional 1km each way detour to the seldom seen, Rainbow falls. End the day at the Aire River.

Day 3

Aire River Milanesia Gate

23km
The day begins by crossing the bridge at the Aire River before the trail follows a fantastic section low along the coast through to Castle Cove. From here, it continues across the sweeping sands of Johanna Beach, then climbs steadily uphill, passing the lush green farmland around Johanna. The final stretch descends down to your pick up point at Milanesia Gate.

Day 4

Milanesia Gate The Gables

18km
Today's section is both dramatic and challenging, but rewarding. Descend down from Milanesia Gate to Milanesia beach, a secluded and rarely visited site. The trail then tackles steep climbs and descents, weaving between secluded coves and towering cliffs. Views from the cliff tops are some of the most spectacular of the entire walk, with endless ocean panoramas. The day finishes at The Gables Lookout, perched on one of the highest sea cliffs on mainland Australia.

Day 5

The Gables Twelve Apostles

20km
Your final stretch brings together the walk's most iconic landscapes. Pass through coastal heath, cross headlands shaped by shipwreck history, and follow the winding track towards the world-famous Twelve Apostles. The final approach is unforgettable, with the towering limestone stacks emerging dramatically from the sea. Celebrate your achievement before your return transfer.
