About this Hike

The Wild West Wanderer is Part Two of our Split Trail Series, a three-day journey from Johanna Beach to the Twelve Apostles. This section of the Great Ocean Walk is defined by its wild beauty — steep coastal hills, remote beaches, and some of the highest sea cliffs on mainland Australia.

The trail begins on the vast sands of Johanna before climbing into rolling farmland and rugged coastal ridges. It continues through secluded landscapes, past the remote sweep of Milanesia Beach, and on towards The Gables Lookout, a dramatic vantage point high above the Southern Ocean. The journey concludes at the Twelve Apostles, one of Australia's most iconic natural landmarks, where the full scale of the coast is revealed.

Across the hike you'll stay at carefully selected partner properties closer to the western end of the trail. This reduces transfer times and places you close to the most dramatic stages of the walk, while ensuring a comfortable night's rest and considered hospitality.

Every detail is arranged: transfers, meals, safety equipment, and the support of our local team. Tier Two guests also enjoy upgraded rooms at partner properties, curated meals, a complimentary recovery session at The Corner Sauna in Apollo Bay, and additional touches that reflect our quietly elevated approach to hiking.

The Wild West Wanderer is a complete three-day adventure in its own right, and the natural continuation of the Split Trail Series.

Day 1

Johanna Beach Milanesia Gate

14km
Your hike begins with an orientation at Captain's at the Bay in Apollo Bay, before transferring west to Johanna Beach. Begin on the wide sweep of Johanna Beach, where powerful surf sets the tone for the western half of the Great Ocean Walk. From here the trail climbs into rolling farmland and rugged coastal ridges before descending towards Milanesia. This section blends open horizons with a sense of isolation, finishing near Milanesia Gate.

Day 2

Milanesia Gate The Gables

18km
Often described as the most demanding part of the Great Ocean Walk, this stage traverses steep coastal hills, secluded valleys, and dense forest. Highlights include the little-visited Milanesia Beach and some of the wildest headlands on the trail. The day finishes at The Gables Lookout, home to one of mainland Australia's highest sea cliffs and sweeping views across the Southern Ocean.

Day 3

The Gables Twelve Apostles

19km
The final day carries you through coastal woodland and open headlands before emerging at the Twelve Apostles. Rising from the Southern Ocean, these limestone stacks mark one of Australia's most iconic natural landmarks and the dramatic conclusion to your journey. After time to take in the views, you'll transfer back for onward travel or an additional night if arranged.
